The largest manmade lake in the Carolinas, Lake Norman's 520 miles of shoreline extend into four North Carolina counties--Mecklenburg, Iredell, Catawba, and Lincoln. Located just north of Charlotte, this 32,750-acre lake has attracted both business and residential development, and become a popular location for professionals and executives in the greater Charlotte area. The lake's proximity to I-77 provides easy access to the cultural, entertainment, and economic opportunities of Charlotte, while preserving a small-town atmosphere.
A number of shopping and dining attractions are located in the lake towns of Huntersville, Cornelius, and Davidson, particularly in Huntersville's upscale Birkdale Village development. Outlet shopping is available at nearby Concord Mills.
Completed in the 1960s, Lake Norman was built by Duke Power as one of 11 reservoirs along the Catawba River designed to provide power for new industries in this growing region. Three power plants are located on the lake--Cowans Ford Hydroelectric Station, Marshall Steam Plant, and McGuire Nuclear Station. |
